People ask me what a move costs before they ask almost anything else. That is fair. Moving is a big purchase and you deserve a straight answer, not a runaround. I have been moving families across the Phoenix metro since 2005, so let me give you what I wish more companies would: real numbers, honest context, and no fluff.
The short version is that most local moves in the Valley run between $300 and $900. Where you land in that range depends on several things we will walk through below. By the end of this you will know what to expect, what to watch out for, and how to keep your costs down without cutting corners on the things that matter.
What Phoenix Movers Charge in 2026
Local moving in Arizona is priced by the hour. You pay for the crew and the truck from the time they arrive at your door to the time the last box is set down at the new place. Here is what the market looks like in the SE Valley right now:
| Crew Size | Typical Use | Hourly Rate |
|---|---|---|
| 2 movers + truck | 1-bedroom, studio, small apartment | $120 – $155/hr |
| 3 movers + truck | 2-3 bedroom home, larger apartment | $160 – $210/hr |
| 4 movers + truck | 4+ bedroom home, large office | $210 – $270/hr |
Most legitimate companies in the Valley have a minimum charge, usually 2 to 3 hours. That minimum exists because a crew has to drive to you, load everything, drive across town, and unload. Even a small apartment takes time when done right. Budget at least $300 to $400 for the smallest moves, and $500 to $900 for a typical 2-bedroom household.
What Actually Drives Your Price Up
Two moves that look identical on paper can come out very different in cost. Here is what pushes the number higher:
Home Size and Volume of Stuff
The more there is to move, the longer it takes. A 3-bedroom home full of furniture takes longer than a 3-bedroom home where the owners have already sold half their things. When I give an estimate, I am thinking about the actual volume of the load, not just the bedroom count.
Heavy or Specialty Items
Pianos, gun safes, pool tables, large aquariums: these items take extra time and sometimes extra crew. Always mention them upfront. A company that does not ask about specialty items before showing up is a company that will surprise you with extra charges or broken items at the end of the day.
Stairs, Elevators, and Long Carries
If you are moving out of a second-floor apartment with no elevator, or into a home where the truck cannot park close to the front door, that adds time. Carrying a couch up three flights takes longer than rolling it across a flat parking garage. This is not a hidden fee when the company knows about it ahead of time.
Time of Year
May through August is peak moving season in Phoenix. School years end, leases turn over, and everyone tries to move before the brutal heat sets in. Demand is highest in late May and June. If you have flexibility, a fall or winter move can save you money and the crew will thank you for not making them work in 112-degree heat.
Day of the Week
Weekends book fast and cost more at most companies. A Tuesday or Wednesday move will almost always get you better availability and often a better rate.
The single biggest variable I see after 20 years is how ready people are when we get there. A move where everything is packed and labeled runs half the time of one where we show up and half the house is still in drawers. That difference can mean $200 or more on your final bill.
Hidden Fees to Watch For
Not every company is upfront about what gets added on top of the hourly rate. Here are the common ones so you are not caught off guard:
- Fuel surcharge: Some companies tack on a flat fee or a percentage of the total for gas. Ask upfront if this is included in the hourly rate or separate.
- Stair fees: A few companies charge per flight of stairs on top of regular time. At In or Out, we work it into our timing rather than adding a separate line item.
- Packing materials: Boxes, tape, and shrink wrap cost money. Know whether those are included or billed separately.
- Assembly and disassembly: Taking apart a bed frame and putting it back together takes 20 minutes. If a company is not accounting for this, they are either rushing or hiding the time somewhere else.
- Long-distance trigger clauses: Some companies advertise a local rate but then charge a flat long-haul rate the moment your move crosses a county line or hits a certain mileage. We only do local moves in the Phoenix metro, so this one never applies to our customers.
How to Keep Your Move Cost Down
I am not trying to pad your bill. When we finish faster because you were prepared, that is a good day. Here are the things that make the biggest difference:
- Pack what you can yourself. Hiring movers to pack for you adds time and cost. Even boxing up your own kitchen, linens, and closets before we arrive can cut an hour or two off the job.
- Declutter before moving day. Every box that does not make it onto the truck is time saved. Donate, sell, or toss things you were not going to use at the new place anyway.
- Disassemble large furniture in advance. Bed frames, wardrobe systems, and large shelving units take less time if we are just carrying the pieces rather than breaking them down first.
- Book early or give us notice. Two weeks out is ideal. We do take short-notice moves and will make every effort if you call us same-day, but more lead time means more scheduling flexibility for both sides.
- Move on a weekday. If your schedule allows it, Tuesday through Thursday tends to move faster and is easier to book.
- Have a clear path at both addresses. Park your car somewhere else so the truck can get close. Clear the entryways. Those extra 30 feet per trip add up over a full move.
What We Charge at In or Out Movers
I will be direct. Our rates fall within the ranges shown above. We do not charge separate stair fees or add fuel surcharges on top of what we quote. The estimate you get from me is the number we work toward. If a job runs longer because of something that was not disclosed up front, we talk about it. We do not spring surprises on people at the end.
We are a small crew. I still answer the phone. I still show up. We have been doing local moves across Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Scottsdale, Tempe, and the rest of the SE Valley since 2005. That is not a marketing line. It is just what we do, and it is the reason most of our work comes from referrals and repeat customers. If you want to know what your specific move would cost, call me or fill out the estimate form. I will give you a real number.
