But you can’t wait until a week before you do it, you need to start at least 8 weeks in advance.

In the 8 weeks before moving:

Start going through your things and decide what you want to take and what stuff you want to allow movers to pack. There will be more stuff than you realize,  so you should try to throw as much stuff away as possible. You won’t miss it as much as you think. Also, if you have any pets, it’s important to know what to consider when moving with pets

Start looking into who you want to do your moving. It’s OK if it’s your brother in law, but remember that there will be more work than either of you think, so it is highly advised that you hire a professional.

Get all paperwork in order. That means anything pertaining to your children’s school.

Make a list of things you want to look into as the deadline approaches. Look at it every day, and do as many things on the list as you can.

4 weeks before the move:

You should have already decided on which moving company you want to do your moving. If you have not, do so as soon as possible. They book up fast, particularly at the end of the month. Commercial moving services also typically need to be booked in advance, as these kinds of moves involve bigger items like desks and more-sensitive things like servers & computers. Getting a professional moving company for office moving services is important for ensuring all of your items are undamaged after moving. Click here to read about residential moving services.

Start your preliminary packing.  That means stuff you’re sure you won’t need, but keep it on hand just in case. It will also be a good time to make further decisions on what you want to keep and what to throw away. Don’t forget to label everything

While you are packing, keep like things together, that means valuables as well.

14 days before the move:

Make sure that on the day of the move, that you have plenty of time to get everything done. That means scheduling at least one vacation day before the move and one after. Two days is better.

Pack more things in order of lesser importance, label it.

7 days before moving:

Get all essentials together, including medicines, important papers and valuables. Keep them in one place in the house if necessary. As you find important stuff, put it on the pile.

Verify again that your mover is scheduled.

Continue packing bit by bit

3 days before the move:

Make arrangements to have the electricity and other utilities turned off.

You should have everything packed by this time except for the essentials like plates, pans, and toiletries.

On the big day:

Pack the last of the stuff. Put it on the truck last label it well because it is the first thing you will need to unpack once you get to the new place.

Give the manifest to the mover and make sure everything is on there when they unpack.

Fall

The incredible weather is one of the significant factors you may want to move in the fall. Fall begins in September and all through November months. Another great advantage of moving in the fall is that you might get a good deal from the moving company during the off-season.

Winter

During winter, there is usually less demand in the moving sector because kids are in school, and the weather prevents many from moving. Less demand usually comes with lower moving rates because moving companies will not be busy. The mover can also quickly meet your moving schedule.

Spring

Moving companies experience less demand in March, April, and May, and most would be readily available to offer services. Less demand means customers pay less, and the movers are more readily available for the job. The weather won’t be harsh, making things easier for you and the mover.

Summer

Most homeowners sell their homes in summer. The demand is usually high with increased house prices. It is the best time if you plan to sell your home. Additionally, summer would be the best time to move if you have children since children will not be in school.

What Other Factors Should I Consider When Scheduling A Moving Date?

Below are other considerations to help you determine the best time to move.

  • Work schedules- If you have a flexible work schedule, you can decide to move anytime you get the chance. But if you are busy, you can move on a weekend.
  • School calendar- Moving can disrupt your children’s school schedule if you don’t plan well. It’d be best to move when your children are out of school.
  • Moving budget- Residential and commercial moving can be costly depending on various elements. If you are moving on a budget, move when there is low demand because moving prices are usually lower this time.
  • Availability of volunteers- Move when family and friends are available to help you pack, babysit and clean up, which depends on their schedules.

Moving can happen at any time once you feel you are ready. The flexibility varies from one individual to another.
