How to Get an Honest Moving Quote (and Spot the Games)

Some moving quotes are built to change on you. Here is how to read one, what to ask, and how to know the number you are told is the number you will pay.

The moving industry has a reputation, and some of it is earned. You have probably heard the story, or lived it. A company gives you a low number over the phone, and then on move day the price climbs. Suddenly there are charges for stairs, for wrapping, for fuel, for a "heavy item" nobody mentioned. The truck does not leave until you pay.

We have run this business the opposite way for twenty years. The price we tell you is the price you pay. This article is how to read a moving quote so you can tell the honest ones from the ones built to change on you, no matter who you end up hiring.

Why some quotes are designed to change

A lot of companies now run you through an automated quoting tool or a call center that gives you a vague "estimate." That number is low on purpose. It gets you to book. The real cost shows up later as a stack of add-on line items you never agreed to. By then the truck is loaded and you do not have much choice.

"Terry was the person who answered the phone, the first human response after calling a few other companies using automated quoting systems. Terry, Chris, and Isaac were all very friendly and easy to work with. On time, quick, safe, and no damages." · Google review

Questions that separate the honest movers from the rest

You do not need to be an expert. You just need to ask a few plain questions and listen for straight answers.

  1. Is this hourly or flat, and what starts the clock? A real mover will tell you exactly when the time begins and ends.
  2. What is not included? If they cannot list it, that is your warning.
  3. Are pads, wrapping, and dollies extra? With us they are not. With some companies, that is where the bill grows.
  4. Who is actually doing the move, your employees or day labor? This matters more than most people realize.
  5. What happens if it runs long? You want to hear a calm, honest answer, not a scramble.

What an honest quote looks like

A straight quote is simple. A clear hourly rate, a truck fee if there is one, and everything else included. No surprise line items, no fine print that shows up at the door. When a customer asks us what it costs, we tell them, and we come fully prepared to do exactly that job.

No hidden costs. Every time. The number we quote is the number on your final bill, unless you add work on the day and ask us to. You will always know before we do it.

The people carrying your things matter

Honesty is not only about the price. It is about who shows up. We do not use day workers. Our crew is made up of employees who have been with us for years, who know how to wrap a dresser and read a doorway, and who treat your home like it is their own. A cheap quote does not mean much if a stranger is carrying your grandmother's china down the stairs.

Get a straight answer

Call Terry, describe your move, and you will get a real quote from the person who runs the company. No tool, no call center, no bait number.

After twenty years, we have learned that the customers who feel good about a move are the ones who were never surprised. That starts with an honest quote, and it is the only way we know how to do business.
